The artist named Jaysan is working on an EP, and being a young broke artist, he is punching above his weight for collaborations on the project.
“I wanted yung6ix on my EP because I love his art and his delivery,” he tells Pulse. “I love the fact that his wordplays are deep and not easy to forget. So I thought it would be an advantage working with 6ix on a track for my EP.”
But turns out he chose the wrong guy to ask for help. Yung6ix has the called him out, demanding for payment. In typical superior 6ix fashion, he wrote on Snapchat:
“Apparently, this guy thinks if he tweets at me for a whole year, I’ll jump on his song. He invested wrongly. To feature Yung6ix costs more than N1 million, and after my album drops, it will be $10,000. So if you like my tweet to my ancestors, they can’t help you.”
Jaysan who is a fan of his record label, KKTBM, thinks it’s pretty much. As a young, aspiring artist who is looking for any career advantage, he is unable to pay that hefty sum.
“I only wanted him to support my music with a verse as one of the rappers I respect which I knew wasn't going to be easy. About the 1million, I think it's pretty much,” he says.
But even if Jay Sean has N1 million in the bank, it will be a waste to spend it all on a Yung6ix verse. It will be a waste to even spend money on a Yung6ix verse.
6ix is right to request for payment for a verse. Music is his means of livelihood, and to survive, he needs to turn his talent into money. Part of that is getting paid to provide guest verses for people.
“I didn’t get this far by doing favors, I got this far by doing favors, I got this far by working my ass endlessly,” he says.
But on the flip-side, apart from dynamism and his undeniable talent, what else does Yung6ix bring to a record? Due to his Warri roots, he enjoys credibility and a good following from the South of Nigeria. But his mainstream relevance has been on a steady decline.
Yung6ix has not had a niche hit in years. He does not influence the culture in any way. And he cannot command a huge fan base that would listen to a new artist due to the collaboration.
Nobody has to pay for that. That money can have better uses.
We are in the age of self-sufficiency in music. Artists can rise to the top, based on their talents and mass acceptance of their music. No matter who collaborates with you, a good song finds new ways to attract its listenership. And collaborations can only help you as much.
If there is N1 million sitting in an account somewhere, it shouldn’t be going to Yung6ix. It will be plain stupidity to do that.
