Super Eagles captain, John Obi Mikel, was fielded in central defence on Friday, as his new club, Tianjin TEDA were held to a goalless draw by Jiangsu Suning at the Nanjing Olympic Sports Center.
TEDA coach, Jaime Pacheco, has been worried about the rate his team were conceding goals during their warm-up matches in pre-season.
And he decided to deploy Mikel Obi in the position for the second Chinese Super League fixture.
The Nigeria international was partnered by Pan Ximing in central defence and together with goalkeeper Du Jia, they kept a clean sheet.
Mikel Obi began his career as an attacking midfielder and was converted into a defensive midfielder by Jose Mourinho at Chelsea. He has also played in defence in two competitive matches while at Stamford Bridge.
